This isn't coincidental at all.

Dark Disc Disease ain't no joke. I am sure with the access to Dr's that players have he will be taken well care of. I just had a nerve ablation done on my back in March --- 90% of the pain is gone - till the nerves grow back

Not that there is no truth to it, but mighty suspicious he becomes useless then suddenly diagnosed with a chronic condition like that. Lot of winks and such going around down in Tampa

NHL allowed Hossa's jock itch to get Chicago out of Cap jail. That can of worms is open for all GMs to take advantage of. I don't blame Tampa. I'd do the same thing.

I don't think any of us doubt your pain and those suffering from such a disease. Thing is, the interesting timing at a time when they'd love to have him bought out for free looks nothing but suspicious. Where was the mention of it before now? Interesting time to start suffering from it.

That was the best one I've seen. A highly productive player who declines suddenly is allergic to the equipment he put up impressive numbers with in the past. Mike Richard's cocaine bust is suspicious also, but at least plausible.

NHL GMs must all be scouring the medical encyclopedias to see what they can come up with next.

I imagine there may be some elements of truth to it in most cases, but clearly if they made it to the NHL it's manageable (until they want to use it as an excuse for cap circumvention that is). In the case of Richards, I think it's very likely he had some drug problem for much of his career, but they only made it in an issue when he was an issue on their cap.

As much as it was with Zetterberg. Guy has had back problems for two years. He would probably be able to get a (maybe more) new contract for 4th role next year.

You guys really think he just gives up a couple of millons and his final chances to win a cup just to save tampa a couple of picks?

It comes at a good time for Tampa, but to say that this is not a real injury is pretty disrespectful to Callahan.

How is he "giving up millions"? You don't stop getting paid when you're injured.

He is 34. Could get one or two 1-year deals after his current deal is up.

I guess I am not following what is in it for Callahan? Why would he agree to that instead of playing for a team that should be competing for the Cup next year? I see why the Lightning would want him on LTIR but not sure the benefit to Callahan and you can bet if there was no real injury the Players Union would be ALL over this.

I already spoke about Zetterberg in another thread. Most Red Wings fans knew exactly when he'd retire years before it happened. As soon as his actual salary dropped from 6 mil a year to 1. Zetterberg played through his back problems for years. Tampa likely had this in their back pocket. He didn't suddenly just develop his back ailment on Monday. As I said, I don't blame Tampa. I'd be doing the same thing. Hossa's jock itch opens the door for all GMs to take advantage.

Maybe he wants time off with his family while still getting paid. Maybe he wants to retire and him and the team agreed this was the most mutually beneficial way to do so. Clearly the players union didn't do anything when Hossa had his fairy dust allergy.

He gets his full salary by being on LTIR. Tampa gets the cap space. A $6 mil coupon to sign Point to an 8 year contract extension. If Cally were bought out he doesn't get his full salary.

The benefit to Callahan is 5.8M paid to him without the pounding on his body. I am not doubting his injury, I am saying the timing of the LTIR is odd. His discs did not just become diseased in the last few weeks.

Why would the NHLPA object? He is still getting paid

It couldn't be that he was actually struggling with the injury forcing him to be in and out of the lineup to cope with it. Then after the season he finds out that the injury isn't going to really improve so he decides that for his health it isn't smart to push it the way he plays so he might as well retire.

Nah that makes too much sense, it must be all those magical winks and nods that only exist in halo63's head.

The only problem with your scenario is that he isn't retiring. He is going on LTIR. Huge difference
